The Croatian society went through a lot of changes to get to where they are today. The Croatians have worked very hard and gone through a lot of suppression. I will start with a brief history, and then I will explain some of the customary traditions and expressions of the Croatian society. Croatia became a part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes against the will of its people after the crumbling of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. For the first time, Croatia's self-governing practice was interrupted, with all activity of the Croatian parliament suspended and the Croatian state divided within the Kingdom. In 1928, Croatian representatives were shot in the Belgrade Assembly; among the killed were Croatian Peasant Party, Stjepan Radic. The following year, Serbian King Alexander Karadjordjevic proclaimed a royalist dictatorship. In 1939, the Banovina of Croatia was formed in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In 1941, after Germany occupied and partitioned the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the "Independent State of Croatia" was announced. Although the idea of Croatian statehood was supported, the majority of Croatians opposed the Axis occupation of Croatia and founded the anti-fascist movement under the leadership of Josip Broz Tito an
Gatherings among family and friends are quite common in the Croatian society. When one is invited to another's house it is considered very polite to bring a gift. The safest gift to bring would be a bottle of wine or spirits. Chocolates are another very good choice. One gift, if brought, should be handled in a certain way. I'm talking about flowers. If flowers are brought they should not be red, unless you are in love with the host. The last thing is the outer wrapping on the flowers should be removed before handing them over to whomever. Another interesting topic that I will discuss is smoking and drinking. Croatians celebrate with alcohol a lot like we do here in America. It is very customary to drink beer or wine with your meal instead of a soda or water. Beer in Croatian is pevo. Whenever a Croatian invites you out for a drink it means that they are treating you. Whenever glasses are raised it is rude not to cling glasses with all who are present. Smoking is still fashionable in Croatia, especially among the youths. There are more youths in Croatia that smoke than here in the United States. You might ask what I mean when I talk about fresh air. Even in poor weather Croatians work long and hard in their gardens. They are firm believers in staying active. Croatians also air out their houses and bedding on a regular basis. In the summer, out door cafes and beer gardens are packed. The way that language is used in the Croatian society is special. Croatians value the use of titles before a certain person's surname. In Croatian, Mr. is gospodin and Mrs. Is gospodja.
