On November 1, 2002 Loyola Marymount held its annual sunset concert in Gersten Pavilion. This years performers included two hip-hop acts, City High and Eve. The performers for this year were up in the air for much of the month and the organizers were tossing back and forth ideas with the school, the school subsequently denied most requests...surprise huh? The two acts did a fantastic job and had two common threads between them. The first is that they have recorded a hit song together but the second and most outstanding characteristic is that their music sends a positive message.
I have seen both of these acts on tour once before in a much more upscale show and enjoyed them very much. Eve had a large stage to work with, an entourage, lights, pyrotechnics and an enormous crowd. The show in Gersten was still what I had expected, amazing. My favorite thing about Sunset Concert was the performance and set I saw from City High. I greatly enjoyed their performance of their album self titled, "City High." The songs that they performed were the City High Anthem, You don't know me, So Many Things, Best Friend, Sista, 3-Way, 15 will get you 20 and their two hit singles Carmel remix featuring Eve and What Would You Do. Like Eve the three rap while they have their DJ behind them spinning their tracks. They have a very unique style that I have never seen before in any other hip-hop performer. These three entertainers have a way of bringing the emotions of the crowd up and down with the songs they perform. They chose to sing fast, up-beat songs for the first portion of the set but then slowed the tempo down with a few of their more solemn ballads. These ballads have distinct messages of love and the enjoyment of life with all those around you. They stress the fact that everyone is their own person and that respecting life if far more important than viole
