Portrait Paper

Short, fat, round, obnoxious, loud, quirky, imaginative, and weird is the only way to describe Mark Tipton, my unusual best friend. He is a stout five feet, six inches tall and one hundred eighty pounds and, surprisingly, agile. There are many ways to describe Mark, but few can describe him completely and adequately. In order to completely understand him, you must find out how I came to meet and befriend him; there are also certain circumstances that need to be understood in order to comprehend and gain the entire "Mark Experience."

My sister got a phone call one night about eight years ago at about six P.M. She picked up the phone and said, "Hi Mark, tonight's homework is page one-hundred fifty seven, numbers one through twenty seven. You forgot your book, also? Meet me at our fence, I'll send my little brother with the textbook." Allow me to interject here to explain; we used to live behind the Tipton's, with only a fence separating our backyards. I saw Mark waiting there and took the book to him; "Hi! What's your name? Mine's Mark!" he said emphatically. That Friday, at six P.M., there was another phone call; "Hi Mark," said Emma, "Yes, here's A.J." I went over to his house by way of the fence at

the back of the yard and my parents went over to meet his parents via the road. It took them five more minutes than it took me and that was five more minutes of playtime; this was my first real chance to get to know Mark and so it shall be explained in detail. We were outside playing when he decided we should pretend we were super heroes, I agreed and we spent a good five minutes (the time it took for my parents to arrive) to come up with their powers and names. He named himself, 'The Comet Kid' with powers such as super speed, a blinding tail, and the ability to make others go slower (in effect, making all others go much faster than those affected by this 'slow ray'). I was 'The Arch Asteroid' (not really knowing what arch meant at the time) and had abilities such as ultra endurance, an ability to reflect light and heat, and the ability to make rocks surge from the ground. We almost always lost and had to think of ways to get around what we had created to ensnare us. Eventually, we ended up using his two dogs to distract the guards, escape into the night, and then later come back to get our revenge. For several years, at least four, we did this as a favorite past time and even today, I have had the thoughts of making a computer game based on this.

Two months ago, Mark visited me from his Maryland home an
