Harry Potter The Hero
Harry Potter is the hero in a series of books written by J.K. Rowling. Harry Potter's story begins when he is born into a world full of magic but is raised by nonmagical people, also known as muggles. At age eleven, Harry is told the truth about his past. He is famous within the wizard community for having warded off a curse from Voldemort, the most powerful dark wizard. Although this event occurred when Harry was only an infant, Harry managed to reverse the curse and take away Voldemort's power. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is book number four in Rowling's series. Although Harry does not fit Campbell's Hero Cycle exactly, there are enough elements of this cycle to call Harry Potter a hero. First, Harry's departure begins with his call to adventure when his name comes out of the Goblet of Fire. Harry crosses the threshold by participating in the Triwizard Tournament. Harry's next passage is his initiation is that he must literally survive three magical tasks. On his road of trials, Harry is helped by friends and by his parents love to keep him alive. Even when he appears to be doomed, he is protected by a connection to his parents. Meeting with the goddess works here, with a twist. Harry must confront the Dark Lord w
The second task is the champions have to recover under water, held captive by merpeople, what they most cherish. Harry discovers that for him this means his friend, Ron Weasley. Once again, Harry receives help. An elf named Dobby gives Harry gillyweed, which he is to eat right before going into the lake to save Ron. The gillyweed will enable Harry to breathe underwater. As Harry swims past the merpeople, he reaches the captives first. He frees Ron and would have won the second task, but goes back to help the other captives since the other champions are taking too long. Harry finishes third, but is awarded extra points for his moral fiber and is still tied for first place with Cedric. ith all of his horrible aspects instead of a goddess. Although there are personal boons received in book four, the ultimate boon is not achieved. Finally, Harry's return is by magic flight. Joseph Campbell states the most heroic adventures follow the formula of the rites of passage: departure, initiation, and return (Campbell 30). Harry's departure includes his call to adventure and his crossing the threshold. His initiation is his road of trials and meeting with the Dark Lord. And his return comes in the form of magic flight. These elements, while not fitting Campbell's cycle precisely, make Harry a hero. Harry is fourteen and in his fourth year at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. At the opening of the school year, Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, announces that there will be no Quidditch tournaments this particular year.
