The country of Antigua was under British rule for some twenty years. Upon gaining their freedom from the British, Antigua began to realize exactly how much Britain did for them. Not only did they take care of the majority of the utilities, but they were also responsible for the general maintenance and upkeep. The real corruption of the city, however, can be seen in the desolate ruins of the public library. The Library itself was destroyed in an earthquake that occurred in 1974. It was not long after this that Antigua gained its much-awaited independence. It was after this monumental moment in Antiguan history when the so-called corruption began to take place (Kincaid 70).
