Tartuffe

A detailed Summary of Tartuffe

Tartuffe is a very conniving man. He manipulates people into giving him what he desires. He is exceptionally particular about who he chooses to con. He is extremely intelligent, and knows which people would best serve his purpose.

Tartuffe realizes that it is in his best interest to have Orgon and Madame Pernelle under his enchantment. He can see that Orgon and his mother are the decision makers of the family. The other family members make their feelings clear about Tartuffe. Damis expresses his feelings about Tartuffe when he is conversing with his grandmother. He says, " Good God! Do you expect me to submit to the tyranny of that carping hypocrite? Must we forgo all joys and satisfactions because that bigot censures all our actions (230)?" He continues to say, Ah no, Grandmother, I could never take to such a rascal, even for my father's sake. That's how I feel, and I shall not dissemble. His every action makes me seethe and tremble with helpless anger, and I hav

e no doubt that he and I will shortly have it out (230)." The family expresses example after example of their loathe for Tartuffe. Maraine says, "I'll kill myself, if I'm forced to wed that man (238)." The maid Dorine also freely expresses her hate for him. She says, "Surely it is a shame and a disgrace to see this man usurp the master's place- to see this beggar who, when first he came, had not a shoe or shoestring to his name, so far forget himself that he behaves as if the house were his, and we his slaves (230)." Moliere has his audience hating Tartuffe before his character even makes an appearance on stage.

Tartuffe does not seem to be overly concerned with what the other family members think of him. He is a very shrewd and devious man. He knows that Orgon and Madame Pernelle are oblivious to his true intentions. Madame Pernell describes Tartuffe as a superior man. She says, "He practices precisely what he preaches. He's a fine man, and should be listened to. I will not
