Anaytical and Synthetic Cubis
Analytical and Synthetic Cubism are phases of a painting style created by Pablo Picasso and George Braque. Analytical Cubism was developed from 1907 to 1912, and Synthetic Cubism developed from 1912-1914. In this period, both artists worked closely together, competing in creating the next innovation of their cubist experiment. It was the constant challenge of one another that led to such powerful pieces created by both artists, works that fully realized the two types of cubism. Analytical broke down the objects being painted to the point where the subject was almost unrecognizable. Synthetic expressed the subject not only through paint but utilized collage and the invention of papier colle to rebuild the objects with shapes and forms more easily read by the spectator. Throughout their time together, Braque and Picasso were searching for themselves, a reaction to the culture of the day. There were questions about God, the subconscious, and life on the planet that all played a role in creating this new art.Analytical Cubism, beginning in 1907, visually laid out what the artist thought was important about the subject rather then just mimicking it. es that were barley recognizable as the original image. Fragmentation of the surfaces in the paintings permitted a more thorough exploration of form. Braque said, "Whether a form represents a different thing to different people or many things at the same time ... [some forms] have no literal meaning whatsoever." Analytical Cubism restricted the use of color to simple and dull hues so the emphasis would lie more on the structure. This technique made it impossible for viewers of the new paintings to reserve their opinions to color, there was no bright color to talk about like the Fauvist works previous. The forms displayed were the only subject people could see. The shapes painted were to be dissected, separately analyzed and then reconstructed to form a new whole. By using this method, not only did Braque and Picasso reconstruct the object in a new way, they dealt with the volume of object in a new way. Both artists used facets, different views, of the subject matter to give a better understanding in paint. The outcome was to be of intellectual vision rather then spontaneous. Two of the best examples of the Analytical stage of Cubism are The Portuguese by Braque and The Poet by Picasso. Painted in 1911, at the height of the high analytical period, these paintings occurred at the point when their work became unintelligible to the public eye. Braque in particular fragmented his subjects to the point that only by using concrete elements such as stenciled letters could viewers get an idea of the setting and clues about the subject matter. Picasso style was much more geared to the form of figures, and so it is slightly easier to 'see' the figure depicted in The Poet.
