In Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck left the widow Douglas and met up with a runaway slave named Jim. Was it a good thing that Huck ran away? Yes, I think it was a great thing that Huck ran away and met and experienced his adventures. There are several reasons that Huck's character benefited from his run away escapades. Huck gained qualities in three main ways. He learned survival skills. He also became a good judge of character. Lastly he learned the reasons why slavery was wrong.
Huck discovered that he knew many important survival skills. These skills would not have been exposed to Huck if he had not ran away from widow Douglas. Huck's fist sign of survival skills was when he broke out of the cabin. Huck took food, cookware, and other useful items to the canoe. "I took all the coffee and sugar there was and all the ammunition" (Twain, 181). He covered up the hole where he escaped. He killed a pig and spread the blood through out the cabin to make it appear that Huck was murdered. This took any suspicion away from Huck for running away
The second survival skill that was shown by Huck was by eating wild berries and fish. Jim and Huck hide in a cavern to keep out of
Jim's capture and imprisonment was the beginning of true understanding and acknowledgement of the wrongs of slavery. Huck had an inner struggle of the way he was raised and the truth he had discovered about slavery through Jim. Huck looses all faith in the social belief as well as his religious belief. Huck was very disturbed by the truth about slavery, he was not even able to pray. He loved and cared for Jim too much not to acknowledge that he was a human. Huck said he was willing to help Jim and even go to hell trying. He believed hell would be a better place than the cruel and hypocritical place where he lived. Huck said that the black man is equal to the white man. Huck frees Jim from his imprisonment.
It was a wonderful thing that Huck ran away from home. Many people would argue that it was not good for him to run away. I believe it may have been one of the best things for him. Yes, Huck did go through hardships and trying times, but he became stronger and wiser for those experiences. Huck benefited greatly from his adventures with Jim. The two most importantly built a life-long friendship. This was a bond that most people strive their whole life to attain. Hu
