Existentialism is about having the freedom to determine what is right for you in your lifestyle. Today's society seemed to have forgotten that the right to choose is a privilege. Past leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King & John F. Kennedy fought hard for equality for all people to have this right. All to often people take things like voting, freedom of speech, and the right to choose for granted.

Dr. Martin Luther King's sermon "Give us the Ballot" relates to race in the 21st century because minorities are still being treated unfairly in the job market. Minorities hold less than half of all top positions in businesses today. It has been proven in many studies that white males manage most all of corporate America. This is why America had to put things such as affirmative action in place, which requires companies to hire a certain amount of minorities each year by law. This is why when you fill out a job application today they ask for your ethnicity. There are open-minded white and black people that know this type of treatment is going on in their place of business, but they fail to say anything because they fear that they may lose their job.

Secondly, existentialism is also connected to civil rights because people get to choose whether or not they want to get a tattoo or body piercing. You do not have the right to tell the next man what they can and cannot do to express their individualism. For example, on www.kiwibox.com there is an article about a teen that felt he had been discriminated against because he had multiple body peircings. He wanted to sue the company because they did not hire him, but he found that he could not. It is your right to express your individualism any way that you want, but this does not mean that society or the workforce has to deem it as being acceptable. A company can deny you a job because of body piercings and tattoos if it is clearly stated in their company policy. This company in particular stated that they feel that a person that has multiple body piercings sends out the wrong message about their company, and that is their right.

Lastly, democracy is connected to existentialism mainly in other countries that practice dictatorship. In a dictatorship government the one person tells everybody what to do all of the time. For example, on www.marxists.org they talk about how in Russia their work is planned, financed, and managed by the state; the directors of the industry are appointed by the state and profits are considered income of the state.
