Cuban Embargo
Since 1962 there has been an embargo on Cuba. Within the last 40 years we have seen the Cuban way of life turn into absolute poverty and a struggle. Cuba's economy has done nothing but fall into an absolute depression, which shows no change in the way it's heading. Other countries also disagree with the embargo and believe that it should be lifted. With the embargo in affect we have accomplished nothing, considering that their government has not changed and the tyrant Fidel Castrol is still in power. Therefore after 40 years it is time to lift the unilateral economic sanctions put against Cuba. One of the worst things about the embargo against Cuba is that it ruins the lives of people that had nothing to do with why the embargo was placed on Cuba. The people have been held against their will since Castro overthrew Batistia. Though Cuba does have better education and health-care systems then other Latin American countries it has all been under an authoritarian communist government that has allowed little dissent. . The embargo is harmful primarily to ordinary citizens, not to Castro or his government, critics say (Serrano & Lehtinen 1). Because of the embargo, some say, there is not enough food or medicine on the island. I
Secondly, Cuba's economy has fallen almost into a depression since the embargo. For the first 20 years of the embargo, Cuba was doing ok but in the early 1990's it fell dramatically (Jatar & Olshan 1). The economy was basing itself on subsidized imports of oil and gas from the Soviet Union who was its patron and ally and the Soviet Union, game between $3 billion to $6 billion in aid money to Cuba (Cuban Embargo 3). With the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 the economy fell by nearly 40%. The U.S. embargo on Cuba has stopped any other type of money to flow into Cuba's economy. Not only has the U.S. put in embargo on Cuba, other countries want good trade relations with the United States so they stop trading with Cuba to keep America happy while hurting the Cuban people. Since the embargo imports have collapsed to one-fifth of that they had been, from $10.1 billion to $2.1 billion in 1993, and it wasn't helping that the Soviet Union aid went from $3 billion to only $50 million in 1992. There is plenty of information showing that Cuba has been falling into a depression and continues to fall. The U.S needs to lift the embargo so that the Cuban market can begin to rise and not become a third world country. Thirdly, the U.S does not have the full support of other countries as well as the UN. In a 1992 UN resolution to end the U.S embargo on Cuba, 59 countries were in favor of lifting the sanctions while 3 countries were against lifting it and 70 countries were abstain (Bergen 1). In a more recent UN resolution taken in 1997, 143 countries were in favor of lifting the embargo 3 were still for the embargo and only 17 remained abstain (Berger 1). Even with the UN not behind the U.S, the United States still as enough power in the UN and around the world that it doesn't have to comply with the resolution (Bergen 1). Ending the blockad
