A detailed Summary of Evil Abner

Abner Snopes is the evil character in William Faulkner's short story "Barn Burning." Abner deliberately builds fires to burn down barns owned by other property owners and we also learn that he destroys a rug throughout this story. When accused of starting the fires Abner doesn't admit he did it and there is no evidence to say he did, but what is odd is that he simply picks up and goes, moves on to the next village. Abner's actions of the burning of the barns and ruining of the rug make him out to be antiheroic and the evil villain of the story. These actions show us that he is a mean, destructive person and is uncaring about other people's property. The portrayal of Abner being destructive is displayed through his actions, his abusiveness is displayed through his speech towards others and the story uses some words to describe his character as being unrighteous.

The way Abner speaks and treats his family and the servants at the mansion show us that he is indeed abusive not only physically but verbally as well. After the first barn burning incident, the Snopes pack up and follow the father without questioning his decisions. When they arrive in the new village his comments to his daughter after they comment on the house they stop at illustrate his abusiveness. "Likely hit ain't fitten for hawgs," one sister said. "Nevertheless, fit it will and you'll hog it and like it," (Faulkner 31) He states that no matter what his daughters think, he does not care, and they will do as he says and like it. The derogatory remarks he makes to the servant also show him being abusive. "Get out of my way, nigger" (Faulkner 42) He clearly doesn't listen to him and talks to him abusive and barges in the doorway then wipes his feet off on the rug. Abner does strike his son Sarty showing us that he is physically abusive, but the way he speaks also indicate he was verbally abusive.
