Chicago by Carl Sandburg is one of the most amusing poems that I read recently. This poem tells us about a metropolitan city; Chicago, which is situated in United States of America. The poet seems to do a lot of critics about his own city but fortunately, he still show some respect and being proud of his own hometown.
As in the first stanza, Sandburg introduces us with all kinds of statements that visualize the characteristic of Chicago. 'Hog butcher of the world' gives us an image of Chicago as a dominant meat supplier to the whole world.
Second line, which is 'Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat', shows that the Chicago is a city of development, industrialisation and agriculture. The economic growth of this city is rapidly increased because of its trading activities (import and export of goods) -see line no.3. This major city also being recog
Although the city is not a perfectly blissful, the poet still defending the city. He asks the outsiders to show him another city that is much better than Chicago itself. He also comparing Chicago with other cities and for him, there is no other place that is good as Chicago. This statements can be refer to:
'Flinging the magnetic curses amid the toil of piling job on
nize by its transportation (by air, water and roads).
In the 4th, 5th ,and 6th lines which the poet writes 'And they tell me you are brutal and my reply is : On the faces of women and children I have seen the marks of wanton hunger.' It shows that there is much cruelty and violence in the city whereas poverty is apart of it. It is also gives us a features of lack of care among citizen towards the poor.
