'The French Revolution was caused not by social conflict but by the political collapse of the monarchy.' Discuss.

The question of whether the French Revolution was due to social conflict or the political collapse of the monarchy is a complicated question. A British charge d'affaires noted in that while publicly the economy seemed well the plight of the poor was once again forgotten

"in a country so exercised about the threat and the evils of despotism."
