How Does the Image of Macbeth Change throughout the Play? Macbeth changed drastically throughout the play, from good to evil. The characters caught on to him fairly quickly. Some were loyal at the beginning and then were completely against him at the end. It was interesting to see how people can turn on others so quickly. Originally, Macbeth was perceived by many as a bold and noble man. He was well respected. He had won a battle for his country and people saw the good in him. They believed that he was very brave and loyal, as proven when Duncan says, "Only I have left to say,/ More is thy due than more than all can pay." Duncan himself was naive and trusting. He believed that Macbeth was a great Thane, and was very happy to give him a promotion. He showed a lot of praise toward Macbeth, verified when Duncan remarked, "We love/ him highly, and shall continue our graces towards him." The three witches had set Macbeth on his murderous path right from the start. They played on his ambition by telling him his 'future'. It seemed that the witches wanted him to believe it was his future, when in actuality they only wanted him to cause trouble to make his future a reality. Th
