What is Culture?

Although culture is defined as the totality of customary beliefs, social forms, attitudes, behavior patterns, values, goals, and practices socially transmitted and shared by a group of people, it is also a term that implies deeper meaning. Culture is intrinsic. It's part of who you are and is where and to whom you belong. It is based on the uniquely human capacity to classify experiences to then encode those classifications in a symbolic form and go on to teach those deductions to others. Culture is embedded in a person's way of life but is not entirely who you become.

I believe that there is more than one factor that takes part in a person's transformation to adulthood. Certainly, the most influential one is family. Family entices culture to flourish, but I don't think is ne

cessarily the means of creating it. Take for example Amy Tan's "Two Kinds", a story that depicts the life of a Chinese immigrant girl and her relationship with her mother. Her mother believed that "you could be anything you wanted to be in America" (374). She attempted to inculcate what she perceived as the American culture into her daughter with the hopes that she became successful, but despite repeated attempts to transmit her personal goals and attitudes into her daughter's character, it became obvious that it was a fruitless effort. "Unlike my mother, I did not believe I could be anything I wanted to be. I could only be me" (380), something she was able to accomplish regardless of the cultural demands and pressures her mother emphasized on her persona.

Culture is inherited
