How Ann Hutchinson Undermined Colonial Authority

Anne Hutchinson was born Anne Marbury in Alford, England, in 1591. Francis Marbury, Anne's father, spoke out that many of the ordained ministers in the Church of England were not fit to guide people's souls. Anne's father was a deacon at Christ Church, Cambridge. 1636 Anne Hutchinson was charged with heresy and banishes from the Massachusetts Colony. She was a very religious woman and challenged the Puritan clergy. Her preaching was considered heresy by the Puritans. Her teachings can be told by a simple phrase that she taught women who entered her house, "As I do understand it, laws, commands, rules and edicts are for those who have not the light which makes plain the pathway. He who has God's grace
