This essay will discuss about gender and sexuality with a reference to a movie named 'Boys Don't Cry'. First, it will have a discussion about the definition of gender and sexuality. Secondly, it will discuss the film 'Boys Don't cry'. The last one will give explanation the connection between gender and sexuality in 'Boys Don't Cry'.

Gender simply means a class between masculine and feminine while sexuality means the capacity for sexual feelings. According to cavallaro, the beginning of the term 'gender' into the vocabularies of critical and cultural theory has been motivated primarily by the necessity of surpassing reductionist accounts of feminity and masculinity as coterminous with an individual's biological sex, and of stressing their socio-political determination (2001). However, accordinf to the Cambridge Dictionary online, the terms gender can be defined as a subclass within a grammatical class (as noun, pronoun, adjective, or verb) of a language that is partly arbitrary but also partly based on distinguishable characteristics (as shape, social rank, manner of existence, or sex) and that determines agreement with and selection of other words or grammatical forms. This has been brought up until the boys developed up to become a man. While, on the other hand, girls is allowed to cry, and allowed to show their emotion. Another fact is that while walking in the streets, a woman is allowed to walk hand by hand with another woman, despite the fact that man cannot. If there is a man walking hand by hand with another man, the society will making an assumption that both of them are gay. Another Example that causes the differences between man and women is during their education. Schools often offer boys to take math, science, and physics, while the girls are offered to take language, hospitality, biology and history. This makes an assumption on the society that women are fragile while man is powerful.

In addition, since a long time ago, according to Butler there is still a society that thinks male children are better than female (1990). It is due to the reason that man will go on with their father business while female cannot do business. A female occupation is no more than staying at home. What is more is the society itself still believes that female is more sensitive than man. Consequently, since young, boys already being taught by their family that, a boy is strictly prohibited to shed tears, boys have to be physically powerful and boys have to look after girls.

In the movie, it can be seen clearly that male and female are divided into two groups. The male groups have more power than the female group. For example, male have the right to choose the women they like, while female just have to wait to be picked up.
