Kevin Mitnick was born in 1965 and grew up in San Fernando Valley, California not to far from Los Angeles. He was released early in the spring of 1990 one of the conditions of his parole he could not touch a computer till he could show he could control his addiction. He returned to Los Angeles in 1992 after the death of his brother. In September of 1992 Mitnick gave in to his addiction and federal officials, armed with a search warrant, raided Mitnick's apartment. All the found was some floppy disks with some encrypted data, which was good enough for the government, so then the manhunt began.

Months went by and no clues appeared till Bruce Koball, computer programmer, received notice from an online service called WELL. This notice informed him that his account was taking up to much space on disk. Bruce then looked at the files and noticed Shimomura's name. The next day the newspaper spoke about the stolen files as soon as Shimomura found out himself and a few other computer experts created a surveillance team at the WELL headquarters in Sausalito, California. They used multiple new unused software programs to track the hackers every move online and recorded every keystroke he made they found how Mitnick was gaining access to WELL through Netcom another Internet service provider. They then moved there head quarters to Netcom then the solved how Mitnick was connecting to the Internet without being identified by using many of Shimomura's complicated security programs. Working with the government, Shimomura's team compared phone company records with records of the activity of the intruder on the Internet. They found out that Mitnick was using a cell phone
