A detailed Summary of Proposals in Education Reform


The solution to most of the nation's major crisis' lies in the educational reform. The education system is responsible for turning out the future of our nation, and it is severely failing at it. Current emphasis on money and capability of teachers is not where the solution of the problem lies, even thought it is thought to be the needed "quick-fix". The educational system of America, as organized and managed by the Department of Education, has failed to be a worthwhile environment for the youth of today. With lack of recognition of the singular student, America's children are put on illicit drugs in the same schedule as cocaine and other methaphetamines. 28% high-school dropout percentage for the U.S. is the highest of any other industrialized nation, and students test scores are far behind that of other countries, even though the U.S. spends more money per student than any other country (http://www.lp.org/issues/program/edu.html, February, 2001). The total overhaul of the education system is the only thing that can stop this menace to humanity.

As an idea of what a student might go through if the teaching was tailored to the student, Example X wakes up on his own after sleeping 9 hours, and lounges around until breakfast. After eating X would likely pick up his guitar or marimba and play some chords and scales. Sometime after lunch X will meet with Y, X's mentor. X loves Y and has a deep respect. X would ask all the questions that came to mind, and Y would answer to the best of his knowledge, or at least help X find out the answer. Y would use his time to bring up certain concepts of importance, maybe a short story read to X about the life of Kublai Khan. X would be particularly interested in Kublai Khan and wish to learn more about the man and the legend. Y would oblige and maybe ask for a summary of Kublai Khan's achievements and pitfalls. X would be on his own for the next day and a half to research and write something for Y. X might meet with Y for two or three hours, and then take a break, for perhaps an hour to read a book or meet with friends. X might then meet with his other mentor or apprentice-master Z. X might not like Z, but still respects that Z has knowledge to impart. Z might show X how to fix a broken bicycle, or some basic plumbing. X would be free to change Z for another mentor. The idea is that X is never forced to learn but rather given the opportunity to learn comfortably.

The educational system fails students on many different levels, but perhaps most of all is taking the thirst of knowledge from the student. There is really only one publicly available system of education, and we can see from the 28% high-school dropout rate that it doesn't work for all students. Schools should offer many different ways of teaching the student that work with the student's own natural abilities. For instance a student who has the ability to understand concepts immediately, and remember them, should not be forced to do a tedious amount of homework to reinforce a concept they already understand, but rather should be tested to see if they still retain the concept.
