Eminem Controversey
Eminem has been right in the middle of many heated discussions since the drop of his album "The Slim Shady LP". Many people believe that Eminem is brain washing today's youth with his lyrics, but is he? Or is Eminem just another character being portrayed by Marshall Mathers III. Is Marshall any different than some of the movie stars that go on screen and change from a normal human being to a killer? Many people are trying to prove that he is different; they want Eminem out of the music industry and out of show business altogether. But things don't exactly seem to be going their way. Marshall just keeps selling more and more records, and in November 2002 he made his big screen debut in the hit movie 8-Mile. Many people are also asking, is Marshall Mathers really the bad boy the he plays in his music and movies? Although Marshall has faced gun and assault charges, many believe that he is nowhere near the violent, hateful, homophobic person that he plays. Some actually view Marshall as a loving, caring father who is nowhere near the character that he plays in his music. By examining both sides of this controversy, we can see whether Eminem's lyrics are a detriment to society or harmless entertainment.
So after examining both sides in this controversy you can understand that Eminem is just a character played by Marshall Mathers no different then movie stars and authors. Marshall has just as much right to write about murdering someone in his song as Wesley Snipes does to murder someone on television. I enjoy most of Eminem's music, but I do agree that it is very unsuitable for some people to listen to. But those people can either decide for themselves if it is suitable or a parent needs to decide for them. If a child is under the age of 18 then the parent needs to decide whether they want their child listening to the Eminem album. And even though Eminem's songs on the radio and television are edited some of them are still a little bit too vulgar for children, so maybe they shouldn't be played as much as they are, or only played at a certain time, but Eminem definitely deserves respect for what he has accomplished. Look at how talented he is he has accomplished just what he wanted. He wanted to cause the controversy that he has and now that's what keeps him going. If it weren't for all this controversy Eminem wouldn't have anything to write songs about. Eminem is a lyrical genius and should be respected, but he should have limitations. Many times Eminem has been blamed for crimes that kids have committed. They say that these kids look at him as a role model so when he talks about killing someone or carrying a pistol they think that it's cool so they do it too. But these kids are obviously not old enough to know what is right from wrong so why are the parents of these kids even allowing them to get their hands on an Eminem album? The cover warns potential listeners in bold letters, "Explicit Lyrics." As a result of that warning label, you must be 18 years old to buy the record' yet the kids are getting the record somehow. Maybe it's the parent's job to pay a little attention to what their kids are doing before they just place all the blame on Eminem. "Prodded to offer an opinion, Michael Gudinski, the entrepreneur behind the Eminem tour, said: "Look, I'm a promoter bringing out one of the biggest acts in the world. I wouldn't let my daughter go and see it" (CNN July 8, 2001). So if parents have such a problem with Eminem then why don't they just make sure that their children never get their hands on an album or never go and see one of his shows? Isn't that a parent's job, to decide whether something is suitable for their children? If a parent doesn't think a movie is suitable for their kids then they don't have a problem saying their son or daughter can't see it, so why don't parents just make sure that their children don't listen to the Eminem album or go to his shows? Overall, how can people say that Eminem is responsible for a crime that a kid has committed just because the kid listened to his album? Isn't it the parent's fault for letting them get the record? There is no the difference between Marshall Mathers and an actor like Wesley Snipes. On the big screen Snipes can play a murderer, but that doesn't mean that when he gets home he is still a murderer. Similarly, when Marshall writes a song about killing someone that doesn't mean when he is done he is a murderer; he is just playing the fictional character we all know as Eminem. "Let me give you a quick reality check. Look up on the screen here. First this is a picture of James Gandolfini. He plays Tony Soprano, whose fictitious character is a foul-mouthed violent lout. But it's a character. The guy on the right is a character called Eminem. It's not his name - his real name is Marshall Mathers. He is a very clever manipulator of pop culture who's created this character just to get (to) people like you. You don't think that wrestling is on that level, do you? You understand this is all just fake. It's art. It's entertainment" (CNN November 11, 2002). Just as people blame the movie industry for the misbehavior of their
