Blacks in the Cities
In 1910 most blacks still lived in the south. However from 1910 onwards there was a great black migration to the north. Many blacks were getting fed up of the way they were treated in the south and decided to move to the lest racist north is search of jobs in the factories in the big cities. However when they arrived they could only get the lowest paid jobs and ended up working in the factories and living in the ghettos. Once they got into the ghettos it was almost impossible to get out. They got stuck in the poverty cycle and many turned to drugs and crime. However some blacks did get good jobs and nice houses although they were a small minority. Although blacks moved to the north to escape poverty in the south it was still a very real factor in the north and living in the ghettos was a dreadful reality. The ghettos were dirty as so many people lived in them and they didn't have the means to clear up after themselves so disease could spread very easily. There was very little medical care in the ghettos so once disease had established itself there was very little way of stopping it spreading. There was poor heating in the ghettos and water and toilet facilities were shared which also helped to increase the spread of ill
However not all whites would think like that, for example Michael Harrington may be open minded enough to see that he wasn't selling hard drugs and he had to find a way to provide for himself and maybe even his family if he has one. As Michael Harrington said in the extract from his book it was whites fault the way the blacks had to live in the ghetto. He may not support the way he was earning his living he would not condemn the dealer as he would know that except in exceptional circumstances it was the only way a black could make that sort of money. In conclusion blacks have had a terrible time in America ever since they arrived as slaves. It has just been one long uphill struggle and they have gained very little for the effort that has been put in and many lives have been wasted in the fight for equal rights in America. Nowadays most people do see blacks as there equals, but there are still those racists, all over the world not just in America, that will never have there views changed. In America the Ku Klux Klan are still active and lynching blacks in the southern states of America. In the years we have looked at the Civil Rights movement did make ground and Martin Luther King Junior was a huge influence all across America. His tactics of no violence did make great achievements and gained sympathy and support from white people from all over the place, But although the achievements were great they only affected southern blacks and northerners had to face life in the ghetto on very low pay and extremely unhygienic conditions with nothing changing for them. The only reason was racism, but this affected the blacks not getting employed in several different ways. The obvious one is that employers were racist so didn't give blacks a chance to get a job in there companies. Another was segregation, in that blacks couldn't go to the best schools with whites as they had to attend the ones with no books and bad teachers so most blacks had absolutely no chance of getting a half decent grade when they finished school. As many had bad grades instead of going out trying to find a job they would turn to drugs and crime and could end up in jail. This process would carry on through generations with only the odd exceptional student making it out of the ghetto. ness among people living in the ghettos. In source A blacks are the majority of workers in three categories however in the best and most respected jobs they are in the minority. As I said before blacks generally did the worst and most demeaning jobs because whites didn't want to do them and as most blacks couldn't get any other jobs they were better than nothing. The best jobs generally went to whites as blacks were not normally as qualified as
