When most people begin to read the Bible, chances are that the first time around they will not be able to catch all or any of the patterns and symbols that are displayed. That is probably because individuals typically don't really care to look for them when they are first introduced to the Bible. However, if close attention is paid, it becomes easy to notice aspects of literature such as persistent subjects that show up more than once. The book of Genesis contains numerous different situations that become motifs because of their recurrence throughout the book and the entire Bible. Although there are many, punishment, feuds among family members, and miraculous childbirths are specifically highlighted. First of all, the topic of judgment stands out from others because it is the primary circumstance in the Bible to be repeated. Adam and Eve are the first people to be condemned because of their disobedience. God had given them life in paradise under one single restriction: they are not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (2:16). However, the "crafty" serpent, which in this instance symbolizes satan, tempts Eve into eating from the tree, and she then convinces Adam to do the same. When
Lastly, it happens frequently that a child is born to a barren woman. Sarah, Abraham's wife, gives birth to Isaac after having disbelief that God will provide her with a son. In fact both Abraham and Sarah laugh when God promises them a son in their old age. Their lack of faith takes them to the point where they decide to have a son through Sarah's maidservant. God, however, fulfills his promise and allows Sarah to have Isaac. God continues to increase Abraham's descendants by granting Rebekah twins named Esau and Jacob. "Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The Lord answered his prayer and his wife Rebekah became pregnant" (25:21). Rachel has Joseph and Benjamin despite being infertile for a long time: "Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and opened her womb" (30:22). The recurrence of this scenario highlights God's faithfulness and commitment to His covenant with Abraham by giving children to women who have not demonstrated a great amount of faith. It would be difficult to notice every single situation that repeats itself in Genesis, because there are so many. Nevertheless, there are ones that are obvious and that reiterate themselves more than others.
