In Beloved Toni Morrison sets the novel after the end of the civil war where slaves freed by Emancipation and those who were given or bought their freedom earlier were victims of random acts of violence. There are several power relationships that Morrison links together to show the aftermath of the civil war from the blacks point of view. The key relationships Morrison focuses on are master and slave, and marriage . In every political and power relationship there is one side that holds most of the power if not all. The same is true in the power relationships of Beloved. In the master and slave relationship the master holds most of the power but there is a difference how the power is wielded. Mr. Garner and School teacher represent two different groups of whites, one who believes that slaves should be treated as human beings and the other sees slaves as inferior and should be treated like so. Sethe rebels and asserts her power to kill her children because she believes that she has more right to them than school teacher does. School teacher represents the idea of the master race where there are physical differences between whites and blacks. Sethe said, 3school-teacher1d wrap that string all over my head, cross my nose around my beh
Toni Morrison1s work reflects history from the black view point because she showed the long term and psychological damage slavery made on the black people. The psychological damage can be seen in Sethe1s ghost Beloved that haunted her for almost 20 years (183). The physical damage was the 3chokeberry tree2 that was on Sethe1s back from the whippings that School teacher gave her while she was pregnant with Denver (202). Toni Morrison1s argument is convincing because she uses the story line format to entertain her readers as she introduces a different view of Emancipation from the blacks. House 124 does exist historically and so do the events where a ex-slave mother kills her own daughter and is sentenced to jail for destroying her owner1s property. The historical truth of these events makes it more convincing because it shows that Toni Morrison has done research to back up her political and historical implications. Morrison makes good use of the flash backs where she links the past to the present. An example of this is when Sethe flashes back 18yrs to the time when she killed Beloved out of mercy when she meets Beloved in person. I think that Morrison could have been more clear in defining characters because the reader sometimes gets confused as to which character is doing what. An example is when Sethe tells Denver that her mother slapped her when Sethe told her mother she wanted a mark too. At first I was confuse as to which time frame Morrison was talking about.
ind. Number my teeth. she though he was a fool.2 (191) Morrison deliberately created both characters, Mr. Garner and School-teacher as opposites to reflect the different white masters of that time. Slavery presented by Morrison also show how most people behave when they are given absolute power over other people. First they start believing in their own superiority and justifying their decisions by i
