The Mango Tree
The Mango Tree is a "rites of passage" story. What methods has the director (Kevin Dobson) used to create this story? The Mango Tree directed by Kevin Dobson is a "rites of passage" movie. It is a movie that shows the journey a young boy by the name of Jamie takes to become a man, and the processes in between that are involved to make that change. In this movie there wee many characters that had an effect on Jamie which contributed to Jamie's change into a man. Jamie's Grandma had a significant role in Jamie's life, which in turn had a great effect on him. She was a strong humanitarian, showing this with her care for the professor, and although wealthy she is very kind and has strong opinions on things such as the war. Also because of her age she is very experienced and always offers Jamie advice and shows him the right paths to take in life. For example during Jamie's affair with Miss Pringle his Grandma advises that he should go after her but warns that it won't last due to there situations. The professor also had a great effect on Jamie, and although constantly drunk, I believe Jamie considered him as a role model because of his respect especially towards Jamie's Grandma.
Jamie's sadistic teacher Mr Wilkenshaw also had an effect on Jamie's journey. When hatch got caught skipping school by Mr Wilkenshaw he used strict discipline to punish him, this included a black board stick and when Jamie saw it was getting out of hand he stood up and tried to stop the fight, showing his maturity and acting like an adult. There were also other techniques used, for example slow motion was used when the horse went out of control in the street and also when Preacher Jones was shot and fell. Also still shots were used when the war ended to capture a still glimpse of the happiness and relief on people's faces. Another technique used was the overall construction of the movie. At the start Jamie is shown leaving in a train, then the rest of the movie is a flash back or memory for Jamie of the events leading to the end where it returns to Jamie leaving on the train. There were many techniques used in the movie to show emotions. Music was used to show emotion, for example a real jarring sound effect was used when Preacher Jones was on his killing ram-page, emphasising warning and suspense. Also when Jamie was with Miss Pringle a restful type of music was used to show there peace and happiness. es also had an e
