Performance-Enhancing Drugs in Sports

Millions of people watch sports contests such as baseball, basketball and football everyday. None of those millions want to see an unfair game. By letting athletes take the easy way out and not making them work hard to reach their peak performance is not only hurting the athlete but also letting those who watch them down. Nobody wants to watch a cheater. Performance-enhancing drugs are not needed and should be banned from all sports to ensure the health of the athletes and also to keep the games fair.

There are many unhealthy side effects from the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Although these side effects are indirect they are still life threatening. Liver failure and increased chances of heart attacks are two of the most harmful side effects (Bad). These side effects can cause anyone who uses them to never be able to play again. Another effect is permanently deformed bones (Sports). Not only can the deformation of bones prevent you from playing further it can prevent you from doing the simple things in life like walking or feeding yourself. Two other side effects are damage to your kidneys and muscles (Sports). Those who take performance-enhancing drugs are not looking at the consequences. They only see the imme

Androstenedione is the enhancer that Mark Mcgwire admitted to taking. This drug can upset the bodies' hormonal balance when it metabolizes into testosterone and estrogen, and may cause premature puberty and stunted growth in adolescents (Sports). Androstenedione was tested on two age groups. In these two age groups, 19-29 and 35-65, this drug produces umwelcome changes in blood-cholesterol levels, with an increase in the harmful kind and a decrease in the protective kind (Sports). Another study with the same age group showed that people who didn't take andro gained just as much strength and muscle as those who took the supplement (Sports). Andro short for androstenedione is a drug that is not needed to gain muscle and strength. It has been proven. No matter what age group a person is in if andro is in their system the blood-cholesterol level is higher and their protection against it has been lessened. The test that shows that andro lessens protection against cholesterol is just one test. There are other tests that have been taken that show other harmful side effects. Andro was tested on younger groups and it did not increase the testosterone level (Sports). That shows that younger children do not need it and that when they are older it is also unnecessary.

Performance-enhancing drugs are not needed to perform at your best, all that is needed is hard work. Luis Gonzalez, a professional baseball player, has never taken steroids before was on a homerun pace of sixty-three on July 30, 2001 (Dark). Gonzalez is a perfect example of a hard w
