Snowboarding

The way a young generation can explore their creativity. It was something they could work with to make it their own. Snowboarding was pioneered during the 1960's and early 1970's. Guys who opted to build boards in shop class instead of a birdhouse or a tobacco pipe (soyouwanna.com). The first boards were very difficult to maneuver (Boardtheworld.com). The designers such as Jake Burton, Tom Sims, and Chuck Barfoot gave up their dreams to work in cubicles and devote their time to creating better snowboards and promoting their sport (boardtheworld.com).

The origins of the skateboard moved to the snow with a smooth transition. Many tricks came from the all time favorite skateboarding (soyouwanna.com). Snowboarding is the ultimate hands on sport and has everyone trying it out (boardtheworld.com).

Boards are they main ingredient in this ultimate experience when out on the slops. Snowboards are usually made of a wooden core wrapped in fiberglass and encased in a plastic or fiberglass cap with a metal edge (boardtheworld.com). The top of the board is known as the deck while the bottom is the base (boardtheworld.com). Bindings are what connect your feet to the board (boardtheworld.com). To position yourself on the board you will stand sideways. One foot must be in front "the lead" while the other foot is in on the back of the board for balance. In this sport there are so many great young riders that have came in and conquered it already. They have mastered the old tricks and came up with some all their own. This sport has so many different people coming in to give it a whirl, which is helping evolve the sport.

The thrill of this alternative to skiing inspired early boarders to try and design new ideas. It was a way for a new generation of teens to express their personalities and their abilities to do the unthinkable. Even thought the skiers thought the boarders to be "freaks" and the resorts at first wouldn't sell them passes to get in and turned them away after years of not giving up, the boarders finally made their point that they weren't going away (geocities.com). Snowboarders are always revolutionizing their sport with new tricks and boards that will take them to that next level of difficulty.
