Christianity Versus Islam

Christianity, the largest religion in the world, has followers in every country. Islam is the second largest religion in the world. About 20% of the world's population follow it. It is the fastest growing religion. In a few years, it is reported that Islam will be the religion with the largest number of followers on Earth, superseding Christianity (Braswell, 2000).

"To be classified as a Christian, one is expected to accept the major Christian beliefs, to be following the way of life that Jesus taught, and to be a part of the Christian community" (Huntington, 1996, p. 15).

Islam is an Arabic word that means submission or surrender to the will of Allah (God). The other literal meaning of the word Islam is peace for it brings peace of mind to individuals. Muslim (or Moslem) is one who submits to the will of God. Islam refers to the religion, and Muslim refers to the one who embraces Islam (Braswell, 2000).

The violence of September 11 and the current war against terrorism have made millions of Americans interested in wanting to learn more about the Islamic religion. Today, many articles are posted on the internet comparing Christianity to Islam. There are many misconceptions associ

The third opposing argument that I am against when it comes to Islam is that Islam permits polygamy. Long ago, before the Qur'an limited and put conditions on the practice of polygamy, men were allowed to have as many as ten wives and considered them property. I disagree with the practice of polygamy. Men should treat women with respect and not as property. Today in Islam, a man is allowed at most four wives but only if he can fulfil the conditions of treating each fairly and providing each with separate housing (Braswell, 2000). Even though four wives is much better then ten or more, I still do not think that polygamy is a very fair practice. It would be very difficult and almost impossible to treat all the wives fairly. Even though I disagree with the practice of polygamy; I believe that polygamy can be useful when used as a means of helping widows and orphans and not mistreated.

Another similarity both religions have in common is that both religions give guidance on how to live and what is right and wrong; but each religion punishes its people differently. Christians follow the Ten Commands and the Golden Rule in which they are not allowed to commit murder or adultery. In the Old Testament, adultery was punished by death. The New Testament is much less severe; for example, "regarding a woman caught in adultery, Jesus said that whoever is without sin should cast the first stone" (Edwards, 2000, 59). In the Islamic law, called Shari'a, taken from the Qur'an and the Hadith, punishment involves flogging the woman and the man a hundred times if found guilty of adultery (Edwards, 2000).

Christianity and Islam differ in a very important way. How they view God's character? What is God like? In Christianity, God is one yet three persons-the Father, the Son, and the Holy Sprit. On the other hand, the Qur'an rejects the concept of the trinity; God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Muslims are strict monotheism.

Yet, besides the Muslim view of Jesus, the differences between the two faiths are fundamental and profound. If one is a devout Muslim, he has rejected the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, believing that, while at one time they may have been the word of God, they have been so corrupted through copying and translating that they are no longer reliable. Muslims believe in the prophets and messengers of God, starting with Adam, including Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and Jesus. But, Islam claims that Muhammad is the last and greatest of the prophets, and that the Qur'an is the final revelation from God. They believe that Islam is the true continuation of the faith of Abraham. In Islam, Muhammad supersedes all prophets, including Jesus, and the Qur'an supersedes all revelation (Al-Hilali & Khan, 1994). To conclude, Christianity and Islam have a few similarities such as both religions teach that God created the universe and all that is in it. Also, the Bible and the Qur'an teach people how to behave properly and what constitutes as sin. Lastly, both faiths believe in heaven, hell, and the after life and both claim that their religion i
