Of Mice and Men

These four characters are the misfits and weak characters of the play. They are all unwanted, isolated people, all with a dream unfulfilled. This is what categorises them. Curleys Wife calls them weak to insult them, because she is interfering, and she is insulted, because they feel she's interfering on their dream. The three men had spent the last twenty minutes or so describing and discussing it, about it becoming a reality. The dream holds them together. But Curleys wife ruins all this by turning up at Crooks' bunk. This is because she's lonely too. There are no other women on the farm, she has no friends, is bullied by Curley, and has got herself a bad reputation by giving men "the eye" on many an occasion. So she is incredibly annoyed when they tell her to go away because they "don't want no trouble". She doesn't want to be alone. She puts up with Candy having a go at her, but as soon as Crooks does, she strikes back viciously. "I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it aint even funny." She threatens Crooks for her pleasure, to make her feel better about herself. Crooks reduces himself to nothing when she does this. Curleys wife is mean and malicious, from her isolation, treatment and bad reputations effect.

However, as a group, Candy, Lennie and Crooks, are strong. Together they found the strength to stand up to Curleys wife. A "change" came over Candy as he stood up for her. This suggests that he has never stood up to Curleys wife or anybody before, but with his new found friendships he has the strength to say finally what he feels. Even Crooks, a black man with little or no rights, stands up to the Bosses sons wife. They have found strength together. They all have their own strengths too. Lennie is incredibly strong. He bust up Curleys hand, and since, he had not given anybody the "one-two" since he did. Lennie also has another strength. He is not quite a stupid as everybody thinks he is, giving him an advantage. He refuses to talk to Curleys wife, because he will not be able to tend the rabbits if he does. He does remember important things too, like to hide in the brush if he does anything bad. In his own way also, he is quite manipulative, especially when it comes to George. He convinces George that if he stays mad at him, hell go live in the caves so he bothers nobody. He is like a spoilt child that knows how to work on their parents to get their own way. People are very open with Lennie, because he is so child like, and never had bad intentions. Crooks opens up to Lennie because he feels (because Lennie is so thick) that he has some authority over him. He's never had this before, not over anybody ev
