My name is Alice. Quick! What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear my name? Most people would say "Alice in Wonderland," immediately tell me so as if they were the first to think of it. Thanks so much, Mr. Carroll.I absolutely hated the name. Every time someone would call me it, I would spin around, eyes burning and say, "My name is Alice. Just Alice, nothing else." This only fueled my classmates' desire to use it more. Throughout elementary school, someone would use this to get a reaction out of me, and I would unwittingly oblige. As time went on joke got stale. By middle school, the name was dead, and I was Alice again. Thank God! Recently, I've re-read Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, (which I loved, by the way) and I've noticed just how similar we are. I've always had nicknames. My father has always called me his "Ally Bear." Now my friends address me as "Alita Bizarre the Refugee" which is whole different essay. I've learned to embrace nicknames now, even "Alice in Wonderland," as a way for my friends and family to show me affection. Maybe even to show me something about myself. Last is my shy phase. It doesn't come out often, but when it does I shrink inside. Once I was babysitting for my neighbors, ages 9 and 7, at the lake near my house, when three popular kids from school came, cigarettes in hand. I didn't tell them how angry I was at them for smoking in front of kids. I just gathered them up and left, with only a timid, "Hey" to the perpetrators. This is when I'm so small I just want to run and hide. Alice goes from normal size to larger than a house and then smaller than a hookah-smoking caterpillar. This can be another metaphor for my life.
