When a country goes to war they are fighting to defend what they believe in. Each battle and every victim helps decide how the opponent will have to compromise at the end of the war. But why must they compromise? And how significant is every dead soldier when you're fighting for principle? The values I think that are worth fighting for are freedom, love and pride. These beliefs are inspired by three documents that prove the devotion of Americans to our country- The Gettysburg Address, and war letters sent home from George Rarey and Sullivan Ballou.
Freedom is something we have been defending throughout American History. As said by Abraham Lincoln "...that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom-and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth" (Gettysburg Address, paragraph 1). The other value I think is worth fighting for is Pride. Pride in yourself and what you believe in, because that is primarily what your are fighting for. It is important to keep your beliefs, especially in situations like war. It was Major Ballou's pride in his country that had him include "and I am willing-perfectly willing- to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this government and to pay that debt" (Ballou, paragraph 3), in a letter to his wife. He really emphasizes his intense commitment to his country (Ballou, paragraph 3). Pride is the basis of why America is so secure and efficient. If every one of the soldiers knows that everything they are fighting for is a good cause and it is going to benefit the country that they are so proud to be a part of; then it will be worth every moment.
