Sam Clemens was born in Florida, Missouri to John and Jane Clemens Where he grew up on a farmhouse, which stood in the middle of a large yard entered by a stile made of sawed-off logs of graduated heights (Zwick 2). As Mark became older he had a ambition to work for his brother's newspaper "The Hannibal Journal". Then his ambition continued on to become a licensed boater in Mississippi in 1857. It was in April 1857, that he went aboard the Paul Jones; and he was fairly familiar with steamboats and the general requirements of piloting (Zwick, 10). So after Mark decided to join the Army in 1861, Mark Twain had by this time decided that he would go with his State and lead battalions to victory. The "battalion" consisted of a little squad of young men of his own age, mostly pilots and schoolmates, including Sam Bowen, Ed Stevens and Abs Grimes. They organized secretly, for the Union militia, which was likely to come over from Illinois any time and look up any suspicious armies that made an open demonstration. An army might lose enthusiasm and prestige if it spent a night or two in the calaboose. (Zwick, 30 ). The story then examines the way that three different couples deal with the temptation to claim the bag of money for themselves.
