The conflict between society and Huckleberry Finn results from Huck's non-conformist attitude. This attitude is a result of his separation from society at an early age. With a highly abusive drunkard for a father, Huckleberry Finn is forced from childhood to rely solely on himself. As a result of this, he effectively alienates himself from the rest of society. Society continues to try to "reform" him, but Huckleberry Finn shows his lack of appreciation in that effort from the very beginning of the story when he says, "The Widow Douglas she took me for her son, and allowed she would sivilize me I got into my old rags and my sugar hogshead again, and was free and satisfied." His actions are based on instinct and his own experience

The third crisis is when Huck says that he as to decide between two things-society and the individual. He makes a decision now and forever to finally resolve the dilemma. Huck chooses the self-constructed values, because after spending time with Jim , his feelings are innate and from within his original deep self. The original problem that plagued him within the beginning of the novel isn't solved, but is resolved. He knows he wont turn Jim in because of his constructed values, but this problem will never be completely solved or understood because societal factors will forever play a significance in the way he perceives his future decisions to come- it is a continual tug of war. The reappearance of Tom Sawyer is the connection to society that Huck will have. For instance, Tom helps Jim escape but will only do it on his terms (society's terms). Also, society has a strong hold on us as was depicted in how Tom knew all along that Jim was a free man but did not want to tell, left Jim in agony, just to go on an adventure to help him escape.

So the second crises arrives where Huck is trying to do the "right" thing. He is trying to fight societal factors and use what his self conscience is directing him towards.. Huck is trying to get Jim to freedom in Cairo. He is once again listening to his own self conscience to help get Jim free from the restraints of slavery.
