Diamonds

Diamonds are Pure Carbon. It is one of the earth's most common elements. It is a simple material, found in graphite pencils and fireplace soot. Diamonds were formed, and crystallized eons ago under incredible heat and pressure deep in the earth. During the earths growing phase millions of years ago, great volcanic forces pushed the earth containing the diamonds to the surface where they were scattered along rivers and into the oceans. All the diamonds that were found were in India then in the 18th century they were found in Brazil. In 1870, in South Africa a diamond was found in the earth far from a river source, and the practice of dry-digging for diamonds was born. This was the beginnings of modern mining. The De Beers family took over all the diamond trading in South Africa and had a monopoly on the diamond trade buying up all the other diamond mines around the world. They did this in order to keep the diamond prices high. Major deposits were found in Siberian permafrost in l954. And currently Western Canada is the site of the world's newest diamond rush. Still with these new discoveries the De Beers cartel still controls 60-80% of the market. Anytime you shop for a diamond you will here the phrase "the 4 C's". What this is ref

VS1-VS2= Has inclusions and blemishes smaller than a grain of salt and can only be seen under a 10X microscope.

VVS1-VVS2 (very very slightly included) Has minute inclusions or blemishes the size of a pinpoint when viewed under a 10X microscope. Rare and expensive.

It is Important to remember color not only for the sparkle but also for the type of setting you plan to put it in. If you choose to have Platinum most jewelers recommend not going over an I color because the yellow starts to stand out more.

Girdle: girdle protects your diamond from chipping. You don't want one too thin because it doesn't offer much protection and you don't want one too thick because it doesn't look good. If it is too think it will look like a chalkline by the naked eye. If it is too thin you will not be able to see it even under a 10x microscope.

I1= Has inclusions and blemishes visible to the naked eye. I2= has so many flaws that as much as 40% of the diamond can appear cloudy and lifeless. I3= bottom of the barrel.

Color. Diamonds come in all colors of the rainbow but colored diamonds are very rare and expensive. Most of the diamonds that we as consumers will see though are either white or yellow. The yellow color in diamonds comes in from nitrogen and the more yellow it is the less sparkle the diamond gives off. So the whiter the diamond the better. Like alphabet but starts with D and the higher it goes up the more yellow the diamond is. D is the most valuable with X being the least valuable. A quick rule of thumb is that if you are shopping for a diamond and they do not have the color for whatever reason you can fold up a white business card and place the diamond in it to determine the yellow or if it is already set you can place
