The Armada was under the control and leadership of two of the most admirable leaders of the Elizabethan age. The leaders were Duke of Medina Sidonia and Philip II. The Naval Commander after the death of previous senior officer Don Alvaro de Bazan. The selection of Medina Sidonia was made by King Philip II (www.newadvent.org/cathen/01727c.html). The Armada consisted of many different types of ships. Many of which were used for different jobs. In total there were about 130 ships, 65 were galleons and armed merchants, 25 small sailing crafts, and 4 were galleys (Stenuit 753). On each of those ships they were stock piled with weapons, food, people, and many other items. Twenty seven thousand and five hundred men were on the ships to be exact. Each man on the ships had a different reason for being there some were soldiers, others were sailors, there was even a few slaves and convicts, and last but defiantly not least there were a couple gentlemen (Stenuit 753). The Armada didn't use all of their ships as a mean of transportation; some were even used as weapons. The idea that the Armada was the first to use was setting alight the ships and sending them into the opposing forces ships. This was a method that Philip II came up with on his own (Davis 325). But just because Spain had the idea first it doesn't limit Spain to the only country that uses the idea. England was the first country to use their ships as weapons against Spain. This event came on July 28, 1588; England set fire to many of their own ships and sent them into the Armada fleet (http:/.historybuff.com/library/refspain.html). A newer ship for the Spanish Armada was designed by John Hawkins, cousin of Sir Francis Drake.
