The deaf culture is often treated like they have the plague. This is what I often see when I see a deaf person communicating with someone. I am from a small town in Mississippi and we actually had a deaf community. During an election a deaf person wanted the town elected official to invest in phones that could translate sound into messages for them. One of the nominees that were running for mayor told the deaf community, if they voted for him, he would invest in those types of phones. At that time no one really learned signed language to communicate with those individuals.
The nominee that made this promise was elected, and of course, ignored the deaf community demands. The deaf community protested and tried there hardest to get some attention on how serious they were. We all have some type of judge mental attitudes towards people that is different. Seeing that people can work together and accomplish a goal or help someone shows me I need to think different about things. The deaf transmission came a long way. In Stephen Dilks book Cultural Conversation he explains, "When Clerc founded the American Asylum at Hartford with Thomas Gallaudetin 1817, he not only introduced sign as the medium of all deaf schooling in the United states but also introduced a remarkable school system-one that has no exact parallel in the speaking world" (p. 24). Sign language is very important to deaf individuals. The schools are vital and I think we should all support the deaf schools.
