Amadeus

A detailed Summary of Amadeus

It would be very easy for me as a reviewer to write that the film Amadeus was one of the best films I have ever seen, that it was a masterpiece worthy of exaltation and extensive reward. However, doing so would be agreeing with a vast majority simply because it is the popular opinion. Amadeus won eight academy awards, which makes it one of the most award winning films of all time but, unfortunately, awards do not make a film interesting. While watching Amadeus, I found myself often board and counting the seconds until the films 180 minutes would come to an end. The film Amadeus is false in the title itself. I was expecting this film to be about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, however by the end of the film I came to believe that the film had been more about composer Antonio Salieri and his contempt for a God he had once loved and honored.

Antonio Salieri had a dream of becoming the best composer in Vienna as well as the world. The music filled his soul like nothing else and he wanted nothing more than to create music that the world would appreciate. He asked that God work through him, that God give him this gift in exchange for his complete obedience and sacrifice of worldly things. He would give up women as well as a

Amadeus was not the worst film I have ever seen. The score was nothing short of amazing and the acting was exceptional. However, I feel like the movie could have contained more information into the background of the young composers as well as some more insight into Mozart's life. It seemed as though we saw Mozart as a child, saw him as a great composer, and then saw him as a dying drunk. I personally would have liked to see more about his life and his music and less about the hatred that filled a jealous composer. The length of the film made it hard to watch as well. There was a point in the film where Salieri told Mozart that he was trying to make people sit through a four hour Opera when they could barely sustain there attention for more than an hour. Maybe Milos Forman, the director, should have taken Salieri's advice.

Mozart would find himself in Vienna, vying for the same audience and same acceptance as Salieri. Soon after Mozart's arrival in Vienna, Salieri began to become aware of the talent that Mozart possessed. But, most importantly, he began to become aware of the fact that Mozart was better than him. Mozart began to show him up and show complete disdain for his work. It was unmistakable that Mozart had a gift. He could write music in his head, remember a complete tune after
