The Effects of Hallucinogen Drugs

Drugs are commonly looked upon as being bad, yet people still use many drugs. Why is this? Many people are feeding an addiction, or feel they need the drug to make it through the day. Also many people enjoy the feelings they go through while being on these drugs. (Glass, 27) Different types of drugs produce different types of feelings, and have different effects on the body.

Hallucinogens are drugs like Marijuana, LSD, PCP, and Ecstasy. All of these cause the user to hear and feel differently. (Glass, 28) Marijuana is a mind-altering drug. It alters your body chemistry, and slows down the thinking process. Marijuana contains THC, which causes your heart to beat faster, air tubes in the lungs relax and become larger, and more oxygen enters the blood. This extra oxygen is what produces the feeling of being high. (Smith, 21) Although many people believe Marijuana is a harmless drug, this is not true. Studies have proven that marijuana is a dangerously habit-forming drug. The regular use of this drug can lead to loss of short-term memory, distorted perception, the loss of coordination, increased heart rate, and anxiety and Panic


In higher doses users may feel nauseated, along with vomiting, blurred vision, drooling, loss of balance, and dizzy. In high doses users may see illusions or hallucinate, and have signs that mimic those of Schizophrenia such as delusions, mental turmoil, and sense of distance. (Publishing Group)

Another Hallucinogen is Ecstasy, also known as MDMA. Ecstasy is well known be a feel good drug, which produces the feeling of relaxation, empathy for others, and eliminates feelings of anxiety. It also eliminates the need to eat, drink, or even sleep. Some other effects include hallucinations, sweating, chills, blurred vision, nausea, and tremors. (Publishers Group)
