Steel

A detailed Summary of Steel

Steel is one of the most commonly used products today. One of its biggest uses is in the construction industry. This is referred to structural steel. Structural steel can be further classified by the way it was produced and it's components. Two main kinds of steel are A36 Structural steel and A992 Structural steel. The letter and number combination in front refer certain descriptions of how the steel is produced according to ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials). In this paper I am going to go over what is in these two steels among others. I will also give you some information about the allowing elements that go into steel and what properties they give the steel.

Steel is produced from mostly iron. Iron is mined and then put into a blast furnace a

Other elements can be added to give other characteristics. Oxygen makes steel more brittle however if silicon or aluminum is added the oxygen is harmless. Aluminum is one of the more popular alloying elements. Any steel that contains aluminum is called killed steel. Aluminum also makes the steel tougher. Manganese is another element that is added. Manganese increases strength and hardness of the steel. Copper can be an allowing element as well. Copper is added to help prevent corrosion of the metal. Another alloying element that helps fight corrosion is Chromium. Titanium gives steel high strength at very high temperatures. Vanadium increases the steel resistance to high impact.

The carbon content in steel is the biggest factor. As the carbon Content
