A detailed Summary of Pride: A Double Edged Sword


A tragic hero is a character who is known for being of high status. Many of their ideas are wise but it is their one tragic flaw is what leads to their downfall. Antigone and Creon, the main characters in the play "Antigone", could represent the tragic hero. I believe that Creon is the tragic hero of the story. He fits the description perfectly. The things he said and did show how a man with everything could lose everything due to his own behavior. His pride and stubbornness are what caused his downfall because he wouldn't listen to the peoples' opinions.

Many of Creon's statements reveal his personality including his admirable parts and his flaws. When Creon says, "I call to God to witness that if I saw my country headed for ruin, I should not be afraid to speak out plainly," (Antigone, Scene 1, 24-26), it shows his leadership and control over his country. Creon also says, "The inflexible heart breaks first, the toughe


st iron cracks first, and the wildest horses bend their necks at the pull of the smallest curb" (Scene 2, 79) to Antigone after finding out she is the one who buried her brother, Polynieces. He thinks that if Antigone wasn't so stubborn she could have avoided the punishment. I personally think that Creon is just as stubborn as she is.

All of these facts show that Creon is the tragic hero in Antigone. He started off being a noble king who had everything. He let his pride get in the way of what was important and caused his own destruction. He ended up losing everyone in his life just because he was too stubborn to bury his brother.

The reason why Creon and Antigone have conflicts with each other is because their ways of thinking are almost exactly alike. "It is hard to deny the heart! But I will do it: I will not fight with destiny" (scene 5, 100). In this statement Creon shows that he is starting to realize his fault
