Animal Rights
Thesis: Animals have been a source of value since the beginning of time, yet researchers have shown no respect or consideration to them and instead have used and abused these creatures until they no longer have a purpose. Audience: Anyone who is interested in fighting for animals. The animal rights has long been a controversial issue. Whether vivisection, the experimental use of animals to further scientific or medical knowledge, is right is a moral integrity question. Is it right to place harsh conditions on a defenseless creature just to see how it will react? The thought or idea of trying any type of cruel experiment on a human is out of the question but to perform it on an animal is another topic. Medical researchers say it is necessary for these experiments to be preformed to better the human experience. According to Gary Yourofsky, a national lecturer for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, companies performing experiments will continue to experiment on a variety animals until they receive results they desire.(Jania) Animals have been a source of value since the beginning of time, yet researchers have shown no respect or consideration to them and instead have used and abused these creatures until
"Animal tests fro drug safety, cancer-causing potential, and toxicity are unreliable, and science is leading us to more accurate methods that will offer greater protection".(Carlson) In many cases, animals studies do not just hurt animals and waste money; they harm and kill people, too. Different drugs such as thalidomide, Zomax, and DES were all tested on animals before they were released to the public. The drugs showed no bad side effects on the animals that were tested on but has horrible consequences on humans. A General Accounting Office report, released in May of 1990, found that more then half of the prescription drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration between 1976 and 1985 caused sides effects severe enough to have the drugs taken off the market. Jessica Sandler from the Earth Island Journal said "Non animal tests are often faster, cheaper, and there results are less subject to manipulation, yet they are under-funded and ignored. It is not surprising that industry prefers the ambiguous results of animal tests, but it is astounding that the federal agency in charge of protecting the public health suit, aided and abetted by some environmental organizations." Sandler, a former OSHA Health and safety official, is the federal agency liaison for People of Ethical Treatment of Animals. She has been surrounded in animal testing and understands why it is wrong. Sandler just finisher her last campaign which was against the EPA. They have undermined their own power by letting unnecessary experiments be preformed on animals using chemical like benzene and trichloroethylene. Time after time there have been reports of animal cruelty in the labs. PETA cofounder Alex Pacheco was the first to make a stand against the harsh treatment in 1981. He led the Silver Spring monkeys case which led to the first arrest and conviction of an
