A detailed Summary of Contemporary Feminism


The Type of contemporary, or second wave feminism that appeals to me the most is that of Black Feminism. This type of feminism appeals to me the most because I feel that the black feminists are the strongest. I feel this way because not only are they fighting for rights as women, they are also fighting for rights as people and as a race in this world. Black women are oppressed because of their race, and again because they are black. Yet, nonetheless, they continue to fight for women's rights and for black rights. In this cruel and ugly world, they find strength within each other to rise above their oppressors and continue to fight as slow as the process may be. They want to join other women in the fights for rights but at the same time realize that it is a step-by-step process and they must earn rights as a race before their voices can be heard as fighters for t


The type of feminism that appeals to me the least is that of Separatism. Separatist feminists believe that it is impossible to change society, so in the place of that, they advocate all women communities where female values can flourish. I believe that most claims made by separatist feminists are completely unfounded. Yes, women do have somewhat different values then men, but who are they to say who's values are right and who's values are wrong? Their advocating of all female societies is not fighting for EQUALITY between the sexes but fighting for the right to dominate society and if they cannot gain this right they will create their own society. This however I feel only brings one back to the starting point in the feminist fight. Feminism should be about fighting for equality not domination because in effect the fight for domination is quite hypocritical. It
