A Good Man is Hard to Find

Anticipation and surprise can make any story impressive, frustrating, or mind numbing. In A Good Man is Hard to Find readers tend to have a ray of hope for the characters to stay alive. The viewer is constantly awaiting the end wondering if they will make it out alive. However if the onlooker was to pick up the hints of foreshadowing that are implicated all throughout the fictional story then that anticipation could be prevented. Flannery O'Connor drops minuscule hints throughout her story to let the reader know what is to come of each character.

Foreshadowing helps to relate the reader to the overall theme, which is death and salvation. Towards the end of the story as the grandmother's family is being killed, her family members understand they are going to die and accept it, they do not fight it at all. Where as the Grandmother shows that she does not want to die and in a sense the Misfit has to prepare her for death. From the beginning the reader can foresee that the characters are going to die and it seems as though the Grandmother would be most prepared for it, considering she is old and constantly talks about death. However towards the end the reader understands that she is not ready to die and would like to see the event of death delayed indefinitely. From statements within the story the viewer gathers that the Grandma believes she is a good Christian woman, but in reality she is not. The reader can assume that by the end up of the story she will be ready to die as a woman that fully understands and believes in her religion.

Rhetorical devices help a story to have meaning. The structure, style, and them all play a role in where the rhetorical device
