Throughout most literature, biblical, cultural, or mythological, stories are told of heroes performing impossible feats in amazing ways, with strengths not known to common people. In Beowulf, the main character very much fulfills the qualities of the epic hero: battling the forces of evil, incredible strength, and supernatural powers.
The main focus of the epic poem is the struggle for control between Hrothgar, king of the Danes, and the beast Grendel. Grendel, who was spawned of Cain, the first murderer, wreaks havoc on Hrothgar and his people. Sensing despair, Beowulf arrives. He replaces Hrothgar and the Danes with himself and his men inside Herot, awaiting a confrontation with Grendel. They meet and begin to fight. In a vicious battle Beowulf emerges victorious, thus saving good, the king, and defeating evil, Grendel.
