The main focus of the epic poem is the struggle for control between Hrothgar, king of the Danes, and the beast Grendel. Grendel, who was spawned of Cain, the first murderer, wreaks havoc on Hrothgar and his people. Sensing despair, Beowulf arrives. He replaces Hrothgar and the Danes with himself and his men inside Herot, awaiting a confrontation with Grendel. They meet and begin to fight.
