Bobby Knight, season on the Brink

I am so glad that I chose this book "Season on the Brink". It shed new light in the life of Bobby Knight. John Feinstein wrote this book masterfully, which is why this book was once a best seller. I felt like Feinstein's point of view allowed us the audience to see the good, the bad, and the ugly of Bobby Knight. By the way, the entire book is in Feinstein's point of view. The Setting for most of the book except for road games is Bloomington, Indiana. The climate is mostly dreary cool, rainy days.

We are introduced in this story to Bob Knight who in the past years had went to the olympics and won a gold medal, and the season after he won gold in 1985 he had his worst season of his career at Indiana. This book is written to show what Bob Knight does when his back is against the wall and what he needs to do to get himself and his team success. In the 1st chapter we meet one of the protagonist's, a guy named Darryl Thomas who was a mellow, laid back kid, who lacked motivation. You kind of feel bad for the kid because you know he could do so well if he really wanted to be. The other protagonist was Steve Alford, who was a unathletic but very talented guy who could shoot like no other. He had a great desire t

Knight prepares the team for the tournament and a crushing blow happens when Alford breaks his thumb. An underdog team defeats Indiana in the first round of the NCAA tournament by utilizing the full court press, which Indiana could not handle. The good times, the bad times, and the ugly times were over. Indiana would achieve greatness soon, but this year Knight was just as disappointed.

Alford starts to get tired of Knights yelling and gives Knight a dirty glare which most players do not have the guts to give Knight. Knight goes ballistic but he calms down knowing that he needs Alford to be successful. Indiana loses to Michigan in a heart breaker where some of the fouls that were called were questionable. He truly hated the next team's best player Scott Skiles because he felt he was a troublemaker after the kid was once arrested for cocaine possession and two times for driving under the influence which in today's game gets you suspended or booted off the team. Crushing blow to the team when Darryl Thomas sprains his ankle and with Ohio State's game being earlier than it was supposed to be, it definately made Thomas out for the next games. Then a little used guard Delray Brooks transfers to Providence, who at the time was being revived by now Louisville Head Coach, Rick Pitino. Quinn Buckner comes down to talk to the team, and help out as he was cut from the NBA team Indiana Pacers. Knight really liked Buckner and he even made phone calls to NBA teams about getting Quinn back into the NBA but no one really wanted him. Knight helps out a Japanese coach who wanted to be mentored by Bobby Knight. Andre Harris commits a no no by cutting class, something to Knight which he considered inexuseable. Knight and fellow assists then discuss a future recruit named Damon Bailey who Knight felt would be a superstar, who later did play for Indiana and was a star but hurt his knee which limited him from going to the NBA.

Knight goes on a recruiting trip where he recruits Keith Smart who later would help Indiana win a national championship. A big game approaches as Indiana beats Ohio State in a crucial game in the Big 10. Famous football coach Woody Hayes comes in and gives the Indiana basketball team some motivation. Woody Hayes had
