Negative Effects of Media on Children

The Negative Effects of Media on Children

Did you know according to the university of Miami, 40% of the average thirty minute news program was devoted to crime? That crime on your television set may be the reason your child may thinks it's alright to bring a gun to school. Did you also know that " 12% of the magazines, 20% of books, and 7.1 percent of pornographic films portrayed some violent theme?" (Carter 1). Sex and violence in media can traumatize youngsters, lead to mistrust later in life and negatively influence children and young adults. This is what incites sexual violence and abuse in the home, toward children, and many of the sex crimes committed in today's society.

Most people would agree that violence is a natural part of life, but what effect is it having on the children, teens and even adults of America? " Studies conclude viewing certain programs of violence can increase aggression in children, make them more fearful and less trusting, and desensitize them to violent behavior in other people" (Clark 1). Studies show a much higher likelihood of a child exposed to violent media to carry out the same violent acts they see on television and film and hear everyday in popular music. Many people choose to ar

Emotions enhance memory, it is a fact. Which would you remember more...a calm peaceful sunny day with no troubles, or a day were it rained and your car broke down? It is human nature to remember and dwell on the negative instead of the positive. Since this is very true, what do you think a child will remember more...a song about pretty flowers and trees, or a song about how bad life is and how good it would be to just die?

Until the viewing public stops watching television or renting videos, the amount of sex and violence in movies and on televison may continue to increase.... six major medical groups, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the American Medical association have stated they believe televison violence is a significant problem....young people watching one to three hours of television daily were almost four times as likely to commit violent and aggressive acts later in life than those who watched less than an hour of televison a day (Grossman 26- 27).

media misconceives. Television, music, film, and other forms of mass media do very little to fix this perception , or to change their programming . "Violent programing on major broadcast networks has increased 14% in prime time since 1994" (Torr 26).

However, this still may not be enough, because most people, if they are even aware they have it, don't use it. The reason could also be the some parents may be too lazy to try

Teen suicide has been on the rise in the past ten years, and so has suicide in general. One of the leading factors in this as well is another type of media, which is music. "Although [music] violence is not the only cause of violence in our state, it is the single most easily remediable contributing factor." (Clark 1). A lot of violent acts are blamed on influences in music which teens listen to, and rightfully so. Even though musical artists do say to take everything with a grain of salt, teens who really feel the way described in these songs are only being led to do the unthinkable acts they would never be exposed to otherwise. Here are some lyrics from a popular song for example.
