The Nature's Dark Side
Gothic writing and the idea of Gothic have been inspired from books such as Frankenstein and Dracula. The idea of Gothic Writing and art first started some time in the middle Ages. From that, creatures like the gargoyles, which are usually found on most cathedrals started to form. In most stories the Gothic image is the setting of the stories and the characters. Also in these stories the setting some how reflects the status of the character with in the story. The three short-stories "The fall of the House of Usher", "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment", and "A Rose for Emily" all relate to each other through their Gothic and mysterious houses that bring the unknown side of the characters in the stories. The story "The Fall of the House of Usher" which is written by Edgar Allan Poe is considered a Gothic story because of the mysterious house and characters. The story is about a man called Usher who lives with his sister in a gloomy, old, dark house. Usher and his sister were not a normal family but instead they have been cursed by a family curse, which makes a person look more and more like a walking dead corpse or a zombie. Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and William Faulkner are three of the most famous writers who use the Gothic style in their writing. In the stories they make the reader see the view the character from the setting itself. By using miscellaneous words the writers succeeded on reflecting the characters through their settings. Gothic writing is one of many styles of writing and the images they give out usually are about the darkness of mankind and death. The last story "A Rose for Emily" which is written by William Faulkner also included Gothic settings but in a different way. Emily's house also reflected her character. The house stood alone which represents Emily's loneliness and isolation. "Only Miss Emily's house was left, lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps . . ." (517). That idea relates to both stories "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" because all the main characters in those stories are either isolated, lonely or both. Emily's house is fearful because it was dark and that no one ever visits the house. Few people even tried calling her but she would never answer. " . . . People hardly saw her at all.
