The Hellbound Heart
The book I read for my report was The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker. I choose this book because on the book's cover it said that it was by an author that wrote many other books that were bestsellers, and on the back the Chicago Tribune gave it a good review. Another reason was that it was not very long and I'm not a very fast reader. As I read this book it definitely kept my interest. It was never boring for more than one page, and you wanted to just keep reading. This book mostly took place in 55 Lodovico Street. It does not say the city or state or country. The setting is an old two-story house that Rory and Frank's Grandmother owned. You could hear the friendly neighbors outside chatting away. You could feel the dampness in the old room upstairs. You could see the shiny, brilliantly carved wooden banisters on the staircase and the boxes laid about the house from the moving van. You could taste the eggs being cooked on the old stove because that's all they had since they had just moved in. You could smell the rotting wood in the damp room waiting to be replaced. This story mostly takes place in 1987 and 1988. The time itself it not very important to the story; it could have taken place at any time in the 20th /21st century.
The main character in this story is Frank. He is bored of what this world has to offer, good at solving puzzles, and tries to get "pleasure" or excitement the easiest way with the amount of energy. Frank is a young man around the age of twenty. He is very lazy, and just barely gets through life and lives on what little he has. He is bored of what this world has and thinks there is nothing left to excite him in it. He searches for excitement and/or pleasure in the Lemarchand's Box, which is an elaborate puzzle and is supposed to give him what he seeks for if he solves it. The book doesn't say anything about his appearance, background, or relationships because you don't see him that much in the book (the beginning, and then a few chapters after that) but you'll find out why later. His motivation is to not be bored or find anything to pass the time. He has conflicts when he opens the box the cenobites ask him if he wants them to show him what they have to offer. Frank is not sure what to say. When he opens the box the cenobites send him to live in side the walls of the damp room of the house. Another main character in this book is Kristy. She met Frank once at her wedding; she finds comfort in the damp room upstairs, and she doesn't work so she is home alone during they day. When Kristy met Frank at her wedding she falls in love with him but Frank leaves and she marries Rory. She is the one who finds out that Frank is living the damp room's walls. She does what Frank tells her so she can free Frank. They are alike in one way; they will sacrifice someone's life so they can have what they want. They are not real but they are realistic. They are not goblins or witches; they are just ordinary people. They are believable because they're not monsters or gangsters they are ordinary people. I found this story to be very interesti
