International Conflict: Border Disputes

Each of the four main types of boundary disputes is as active today as it was in years' past. Positional disputes are as common in central Africa as obesity is in the US. Territorial disputes have overshadowed the history of Southeast Asia. Resource disputes are nearly inseparable from daily living in the Middle East. A cultural dispute has been and will, foreseeable, continue between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Border disputes could almost be called the "favorite past time" of the international political arena.

Rwanda and Burundi have been disputing their shared border with such hostility that there is a permanently dead area between them. These two nations have been unable to decide to what extent each own the land. The problem is furthered because of the tribal-style warfare in each country. Neither country has been able to effectively stabilize itself, and to a much lesser extent, the border.

The tribal warfare in each country has created a political gash from which the two countries will require years to recover. Part of the big problem is that there is no standing government in either country that can act as a mediator. There is no entity with which to negotiate. Both countries suffer from the same pro

The international political culture of today is fortunate enough to have international organizations such as the ICJ and UN to assist in the resolutions. When the former Yugoslavia began to fall apart, international organization, many associated directly with the UN, helped the refuges and attempted to stabilize the region, and it is the ICJ that is deciding the fate of Slobodan Milosevic. There are still a great number of border disputes, but at least there are emerging the tools by which these problems may be peacefully resolved.

With all of this conflict in progress, it would be a reasonable conclusion that border conflicts are the "favorite past time" of international political culture. Indeed, this conclusion would be consistent with historical analyses which indicate that the majority of wars have been caused by one of these factors. Even the wars of ancient Rome were mostly due to land-grubbing leaders. Going back to biblical times, conflicts between cultures were as prevalent as they are today. Israel did not have a secure homeland in Exodus, and today it is constantly hoarded by the Palestinian Authority to give up the homeland for which it worked so hard.
