Life Without Gender Roles;

Gender roles, as explained by Dr. Ed Singer a professor at Northwest State, are "attitudes and activities that a society links to each sex." These roles refer to as the 'gendered division of labor,' are closely related to gender stereotyping - a prejudiced description of who 'men' are and 'women' are."A perfect world would have no such thing as gender role. Dorothy Bryant's novel, The Kin of Ata are Waiting for You, incorporates such a society. The 1971 novel pocesses the idealistic society that the younger generations of that era were striving for. Bryant explains the thought of equal living and "free loving" as a general way of living for the kin of Ata, just as the Hippies of the 60s and 70s imagined it.

The kin of Ata are an unusual type of society, that our present, real world society views as "odd". Everyone is equal and there are no gender roles. Everyone does the work on the island of Ata. The narrator in the story explained, "but everyonehelped with the work. I saw no difference of function, except the women obviously nursed the infants; but the men carried and cared for the small ones as much as the women did." (Bryant 20) Caring
