Narritive Techniques-Long Day
A detailed Summary of Narritive Techniques-Long Day
Eugene O'Neill does an outstanding job of developing different characterization techniques in the novel, Long Day's Journey Into Night. O'Neill proves that the physical details of a character, the actions of a character, and the dialogue of other characters about a certain character can reveal different character traits.
There is a lot that can be revealed about a certain character by their physical traits or details. Two examples of this characterization technique come from, Long Day's Journey Into Night. The first example of this is, "Mary is fifty-four...Her high forehead is framed by thick, pure white hair." (O'Neill, pg. 12). Mary is only fifty-four years old, and that is a bit too young to have a head full of pure white hair. This signifies that Mary has gone through a lot of stress in her life, and she has been through many of problems. A second example of how much can be revealed through physica

A lot of things about a character can be revealed in the dialogue of other characters about a character. An example of this is, "That's right! Run him down! Run down everybody! Everyone is a fake to you!" (O'Neill, pg. 31). This quotation is said by Tyrone to Jamie. It proves that Jamie has a hard time trusting other people and he has been like that for a long time, since Tyrone had noticed it. A second example of this is, "You didn't give him any money I hope...He'd only spend it on drink and you know what a vile, poisonous tongue ha has when he's drunk." (O'Neill, pg. 85). This is said by Mary to Tyrone. This shows that Jamie has a severe drinking problem, which is probably caused by depression. His parents cannot even trust him enough to give him some money because they believe he will buy booze with it.
