Narritive Techniques-Long Day

Eugene O’Neill does an outstanding job of developing different characterization techniques in the novel, Long Day’s Journey Into Night. O’Neill proves that the physical details of a character, the actions of a character, and the dialogue of other characters about a certain character can reveal different character traits.

There is a lot that can be revealed about a certain character by their physical traits or details. Two examples of this characterization technique come from, Long Day’s Journey Into Night. The first example of this is, “Mary is fifty-four…Her high forehead is framed by thick, pure white hair.” (O’Neill, pg. 12). Mary is only fifty-four years old, and that is a bit too young to have a head full of pure white hair.
